I almost didn’t make it to this birth! As a birth photographer in Gilbert, Arizona, one of the biggest things I worry about is not making it! Kairleigh texted me when she was headed to the hospital and then again when the arrived, and then went radio silent. I knew she was going to go quickly based on her other 3 births, so I headed straight to the hospital when I heard from her. I waited a bit, knowing that it can take a while to get checked in, but after about an hour of waiting at the hospital and not hearing from her, I started to get a little worried! I texted her again, and when 20 minutes went by and I still didn’t hear from her, I texted her husband!

After another 20 minutes went by without hearing from either of them, I did something I don’t normally do — I went back into L&D to see if I could find them! I asked a nurse if they had a room yet, and she told me they were still in triage. So I went back out and waited again. I texted them both about 45 minutes later, no response. I went back again, still in triage.

At this point I wasn’t sure if they were still in triage because she wasn’t progressing or because something had happened, but I decided to go wait in my car for a bit! I didn’t want to upset the nurses, so I waited another 30 minutes before I went in to check again. I checked with the front desk this time and they said she was in a room! I rushed back! It turned out she was in so much pain that her and her husband hadn’t even looked at their phones once in the 3 hours since they had gotten there.

I’m so glad I went with my instincts, because she had the baby within 20 minutes of me coming into the room! It was such a special moment and I’m so glad I could be there for her.
