Booking maternity photos often comes with a lot of questions, especially if this is your first pregnancy or your first time working with a professional photographer! As a maternity photographer in Gilbert, Arizona, I hear many of the same questions from expecting moms, and I always love walking them through what to expect.

Below are the most common maternity photography questions I get, answered honestly and thoughtfully so you can feel confident and relaxed going into your session.

When Is the Best Time to Schedule Maternity Photos?

I typically recommend scheduling maternity photos between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, your belly is most likely showing, and most moms are still feeling comfortable enough to move, walk, and enjoy the experience.

If you’re expecting twins or know you tend to deliver early, I usually suggest scheduling a little sooner! We’ll always choose timing based on what feels best for you.

When Should I Book My Maternity Session?

I recommend booking your maternity session during your second trimester, if possible! My calendar tends to fill up quickly, especially for golden hour outdoor sessions here in Gilbert.

Booking early gives us plenty of flexibility for:

  • Weather

  • Outfit planning

  • Location selection

And it ensures you don’t feel rushed later in pregnancy!

Where Do Maternity Sessions Take Place in Gilbert?

Maternity sessions can take place either outdoors, in a studio, or in your home, depending on your preference.

Outdoor maternity sessions around Gilbert often take place in:

  • Open desert areas

  • Neutral parks and trails

  • Quiet natural spaces with soft light

If you prefer something more intimate, in-home lifestyle maternity sessions or studio sessions are also a beautiful option — especially if you want a cozy, relaxed feel. I love helping clients choose a location that fits the season, lighting, and overall vibe they’re drawn to!

What Should I Wear for My Maternity Photos?

This is one of the most common questions I get! My biggest recommendation for what to wear is what you feel most comfortable in. My philosophy is that you’ll love your photos the most if you’re wearing something you feel comfortable and beautiful in! If you’d like a little more help with styling, that is one of my very favorite things to do!

For maternity sessions, I recommend:

  • Neutral or earth tones

  • Flowy, comfortable dresses

  • Soft textures like linen

I suggest avoiding bold patterns, logos, or bright neon colors. If your partner or children are joining, I’ll help coordinate outfits so everything feels cohesive without looking overly styled!

After booking, I will also send you my full session guide that includes styling and a client closet for your session!

I’m Awkward in Front of the Camera — Is That Okay?

Absolutely. Most of my clients tell me this before their session.

You don’t need to know how to pose — that’s my job. I gently guide you with natural prompts and movement so nothing feels stiff or forced. My sessions are calm, encouraging, and focused on connection rather than perfection.

Many moms tell me afterward that the session felt more like a walk and conversation than a photo shoot.

Can My Partner or Other Children Join the Session?

Yes!!! These are some of my absolute favorite sessions!

Including your partner and older children allows us to document your family exactly as it is in this season. Lifestyle maternity sessions are especially great for siblings because they allow space for movement, play, and natural interaction.

Also, is there anything sweeter than your older kids loving on your pregnant belly?!

What If the Weather Is Bad?

Living in Arizona definitely means planning around the elements. If the weather isn’t ideal — whether it’s extreme heat, wind, or unexpected rain — we’ll make a plan together.

That might mean:

  • Adjusting the session time

  • Rescheduling for a different day

  • Choosing an alternative location

Your comfort and safety always come first.

How Long Is a Maternity Session?

Most maternity sessions last about 45-60 minutes. This gives us plenty of time for movement, outfit adjustments if needed, and moments that don’t feel rushed. I want your session to feel personal and unhurried!

When Will I Receive My Photos?

After your session, I carefully cull and edit your images in my natural, true-to-life style. You’ll receive a full online gallery with all the best images with full printing rights. My turnaround time for photos is typically 2-3 weeks!

Do You Also Photograph Newborn Sessions?

Yes! Many of my maternity clients go on to book newborn, birth and Fresh 48 sessions as well. Documenting pregnancy and those first days with your baby creates a beautiful, connected story.

If you’re interested in booking both, I’m always happy to walk you through options and timing!

Is Maternity Photography Worth It?

When I was pregnant with my first, I was so uncomfortable in my body that I didn’t take maternity photos. It is one of my biggest regrets! I tell all pregnant moms that I truly believe maternity photography is about more than documenting how you look — it’s about remembering how this season felt. Pregnancy moves quickly, even when it feels long, and having photos to look back on can be incredibly meaningful!

If you’re expecting and considering maternity photos in Gilbert, Arizona, I would be honored to document this chapter for you.
